VIRC®
SYSTEM TWO
VERTICAL INTERVAL REMOTE CONTROL
The VIRC® SYSTEM TWO is a remote control system which sends and receives operating commands through the vertical interval of your video signal. This process is completely transparent to the video, and once VIRC® is “inserted” this video may be transmitted by any conventional method or stored on tape. VIRC® eliminates the need for additional subcarriers or phone lines to carry control signals by using the Vertical Interval on a video signal.
You will find several applications for the different VIRC® systems such as providing a solution to the problem of performing Syndex and Network non-duplication program blocking on cable TV. VIRC® SYSTEM TWO is the only solution which gives the broadcaster total switch control, while avoiding the headache of DTMF tones or error plagued timers.
The popular VIRC receiver model provides you with a low cost way to perform “manual” remote site switching with VIRC® technology. The VIRC® SYSTEM TWO controller allows you to “trigger’ a switch closure anytime you wish, anywhere on your VIRC® system. With the VIRC® SYSTEM TWO you have 128 unique switch combinations which allow you to “address” individual locations. This system is used for camera pan, tilt, and focus, microwave transmitter and receiver remote control, remote ad insertion for cable TV and a host of other applications.
VIRC® SYSTEM TWO also allows serial data transmission to any receiver at 9,600 baud at the same time the system is being used to control relays.
A VIRC® SYSTEM TWO system consists of one VIRC® SYSTEM TWO Controller, typically located at your studio, and an unlimited number of VIRC® SYSTEM TWO receivers located anywhere you wish. The VIRC® SYSTEM TWO receiver monitors a preset line in your program video VBI and responds instantly to your switch commands (or your data transmission). You may install a VIRC® receiver anywhere you receive your program video.
The VIRC® SYSTEM TWO receiver contains a baseband Video input and eight SPDT relays connected to terminal strips on the rear of each "channel" card. When a receiver sees a correct command signal, in the VBI, it responds with the switching you desire. This VIRC® command signal is transmitted by you with a VIRC controller.
Each VIRC® SYSTEM TWO receiver attached to your video signal may be set to respond to one or more of 16 different control channels. Each "channel" can control up to 8 relays. When you install a VIRC® SYSTEM TWO receiver you set the channel number you want that channel card to respond to. Each channel card has 4 relays with individual outputs. Four channel cards can be placed into each VIRC® SYSTEM TWO receiver chassis for a total of 16 relays possible per receiver (see rear panel picture below).
VIRC® CONTROLLERS
A VIRC® SYSTEM TWO system consists of one VlRC® controller and an unlimited number of VIRC® receivers. The VlRC® controller is controlled by either a DB-37 connector (opto-isolated inputs), an RS-232 serial port, or a USB port. Software is provided for the serial controlling of the VIRC® controller. The VIRC® controller outputs a data signal which is synchronized to your video and is then supplied to an external VITS inserter such as the TEK or Phillips.
